One of the first questions parents ask when they register for Pittsburgh NFL League is simple: what does my child need to bring? The good news is that flag football is one of the most affordable youth sports you can sign your child up for. The equipment list is short, most of it you probably already have at home, and Pittsburgh NFL League provides the key items so you do not have to go out and buy a uniform or a flag belt.

What Pittsburgh NFL League Provides

Pittsburgh NFL League provides every player with a jersey and a flag belt. You do not need to purchase these separately. The jersey represents your child's team after the draft, and the flag belt is the core piece of equipment that makes flag football work. When an opposing player pulls your flag, the play is over. It is a clean, safe way to play football that keeps every player protected while keeping the game competitive.

What Players Need to Bring

Cleats are the most important item on the list. Flag football is played on grass, and cleats help your child cut, stop, and accelerate without slipping. Molded rubber cleats work great. Metal cleats are not recommended for youth play. If your child already plays soccer, those cleats will work fine on the flag football field.

Athletic shorts or athletic pants are the standard bottom. Avoid jeans or anything with belt loops or pockets that could catch a flag. The goal is freedom of movement and nothing that could interfere with the flag belt. Compression shorts or leggings underneath are a good idea, especially for early season games in April when temperatures in Pittsburgh can still be cool.

A water bottle is a must. Games and practices move at a fast pace and hydration matters. There is no fountain on every sideline, so build the habit of bringing water from day one.

Mouthpiece Requirements by Division

A mouthpiece is required for all players in Pittsburgh NFL League except those in Rookie League, which covers ages 4 through 6. For all Coed Divisions and All-Girls Divisions, your child must have a mouthpiece in to participate. This is a league rule and it is enforced. You can find a basic youth mouthpiece at any sporting goods store for a few dollars. Boil-and-bite mouthpieces are the most comfortable and the most widely used.

Some parents ask about helmets or pads. Flag football is a non-contact sport. There is no tackling, no blocking, and no need for helmets or shoulder pads. That is one of the key advantages of flag football. It removes the physical collision element while keeping all of the skill development, teamwork, and competitive structure that makes football special.

Equipment for Rookie League (Ages 4-6)

Rookie League is the entry point for our youngest players. At this age, the focus is on fundamentals and fun. There is no mouthpiece requirement. Comfortable athletic clothing, sneakers or cleats, and a water bottle are all they need. Pittsburgh NFL League handles the rest. Our Rookie League coaches are experienced working with young children and the environment is encouraging, positive, and safe.

Quick Equipment Checklist

Here is a simple checklist for game and practice days. Cleats are needed for all divisions. Athletic shorts or pants are needed for all divisions. A mouthpiece is required for all players ages 7 and up. A water bottle is needed for all players. Everything else including your jersey and flag belt is provided by Pittsburgh NFL League.
