One of the most common questions we get from parents across Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania is a simple one: how old does my child need to be to play flag football?

The short answer is four years old. Understanding how Pittsburgh NFL League structures its divisions can help you figure out exactly where your child fits in and what to expect from their first season.

Pittsburgh NFL League Divisions by Age

At Pittsburgh NFL League, player divisions are determined by your child's age as of August 1st of the current year. That date is the official cutoff and applies for the entire season.

Rookie League is for children ages 4 through 6. This is where it all begins. Rookie League is designed to be fun, low-pressure, and focused on introducing the basics of the game. Kids learn how to run routes, snap the ball, and pull flags. No mouthpiece is required at this level.

The Coed Division serves players ages 7 through 14. Boys and girls compete together in this division, which is where the game picks up in intensity and skill development. A mouthpiece is required for all players in this division.

The All-Girls Division is open to girls ages 7 through 17, including high school players. With flag football now recognized as a high school sport in Pennsylvania and headed to the 2028 Olympics, the All-Girls Division is a serious pathway for young female athletes.

When Does the Age Cutoff Apply?

Your child's division is based on how old they are on August 1st of the current year, not the registration date or season start date. If your child turns 7 on August 2nd, they would still play in Rookie League. If they turn 7 on or before August 1st, they move up to the Coed Division.

What to Expect in Your Child's First Season

Training Camp starts April 4th at Linton Middle School, 250 Aster Street, Pittsburgh PA 15235. Camp runs four sessions and is strongly encouraged for all new players. The PNL Live Draft is Friday April 17th. First games are Saturday April 18th. The Championship is June 6th.

Why Start Early?

Children who start in Rookie League at ages 4 through 6 develop football IQ, motor skills, and confidence before stepping into competitive games. That is what Pittsburgh NFL League has been building across Western Pennsylvania since 2004.
