What It Means to Play in the NFL FLAG League of the Year
Only one youth flag football league in Pennsylvania has ever been named NFL FLAG League of the Year: Pittsburgh NFL League. That recognition is not a banner we hang and forget. It shapes what every player experiences, from the night they are drafted to the day they play for a championship. Here is what it means for your child.
A standard, not just a trophy
NFL FLAG League of the Year is a national recognition. A league earns it by getting the details right: player development, community impact, organization and growth. PNL has been building that kind of league in Western Pennsylvania since 2004, and the goal every season is to live up to it.
For families, the standard shows up in simple ways. Every player is drafted onto a balanced, NFL-branded team. Every team plays official 5 on 5 NFL FLAG rules. Every game is tracked, and every player has a path to a bigger stage if they want one.
It starts with the PNL Live Draft
Many youth leagues hand out rosters. PNL drafts them. The PNL Live Draft is Thursday and Friday of the third week of April, with players split across the two nights based on registration numbers. Coaches select every player, so teams come out balanced and every child hears their name called. No tryouts and no cuts. For a lot of kids, draft night is the moment the season becomes real.
Every game lives in PNL GameDay
PNL GameDay is the league's own home for live scores, standings, stats and player profiles. Families can follow a game as it happens, check the standings after the weekend, and see how their child's numbers add up over the season. Player of the Week and weekly stat leaders give kids something to aim for beyond the final score.
A record book and a list of champions
Great seasons do not disappear at PNL. The PNL record book keeps the league's best performances, and the past champions page honors the teams that finished on top. When your child steps on the field, they are playing for a place in that history.
The season builds to Saturday playoffs at Linton Middle School in Penn Hills, where every PNL location comes together. Linton is also home to All-Star Weekend and the PNL Honors Ceremony, where end of season awards are handed out.
A real path to the national stage
League of the Year is also about where a league can take its players. The Boyce Park Jets 8U won the Jets Regional and the Boyce Park Steelers 10U won the Steelers Regional, and both teams qualified for the 2026 NFL FLAG Championships at Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield, Indiana. Two teams from one league, in the same season, earning a place among the best youth flag football teams in the country. Read the full story.

The same experience at all four locations
For Spring 2027, PNL plays at four locations, and the League of the Year experience is the same at each one.
Penn Hills at Linton Middle School: Saturdays. Every division, including Rookie 6U and the All-Girls League (10U, 14U and HS Girls).
Boyce Park in Plum: Sundays. Coed 8U to 14U.
Swissvale at Dickson: Thursday nights. Coed 8U to 14U.
Pittsburgh at Mellon Park: Friday nights. Coed 8U to 14U.
Not sure which one is closest? Our local guides can help: Friday nights at Mellon Park for East End families, Wilkinsburg and Homewood: Swissvale or Mellon Park, and Verona, Oakmont and Plum Borough: Saturdays in Penn Hills. For every program and date, see the Spring 2027 guide.
Open to every family
A League of the Year should be a league any family can join. No experience is needed, and coaches teach the game from the first practice. PNL provides the jersey and flag belt. Divisions are based on your child's age as of August 1, 2026.
Registration is $145, and the first 50 players across all four locations pay $135. You can pay in full, or put $45 down and pay the rest in monthly or biweekly payments. Families with a household income under $83,730 whose player is enrolled in Medicaid, SNAP or WIC can apply for the NFL FLAG Grant. A parent or guardian applies directly with RCX Sports by March 10, 2027. Our financial assistance page has more options.
